FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):
EX: The article cites Maria Nikolajeva, a professor of at Cambridge, as saying that Bella does not "in any way promote independent thinking or personal development" in women, instead portraying a woman "meek and willing to do anything for her vampire boyfriend" (POV).
Martial Arts was seen as negative effect after Endresen and Olweus "concluded that participating in power sports such as weightlifting, wrestling and oriental martial arts (karate, judo, and taekwondo) leads to an increase in antisocial behavior in youth"(Vertonghen and Theeboom).

Researchers "suggested that traditional martial arts practise [have] a positive influence on personality traits of participants, as opposed to training in modern martial arts" because  it focuses on "meditative aspects, stressing selfcontrol, conflict avoidance, respect for others, kata training, and the study of philosophy"(Vertonghen and Theeboom).

Steyn and Roux "compared the psychological well-being of taekwondo-in, hockey players and a non-sport group" and found that the "personal growth and self-acceptance scores of taekwondoin were significantly higher than those of the hockey players and the non-sport group"(Vertonghen and Theeboom).
With the relationship between martial arts and violence "was concluded that longer training was associated with lower levels of aggressiveness"(Vertonghen and Theeboom).
Authors like Konzak, Klavora and Layton suggest "that it takes several years of training
to obtain positive outcomes" and it is still unknown if "changes in personality, psychological and behavioral characteristics are long-lasting"(Vertonghen and Theeboom).

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

The Journal of Sports and Medicine brings together different sources to discuss the issue of martial arts having a positive or negative effect on its participants. Some negative aspects to martial arts is that it can produce antisocial behaviors. It takes time to see these positive changes because the longer you have been participating in it the more you gain those positive traits of self confidence and self acceptance. Tests have proven that participating in martial arts has a better impact then those playing other sports like hockey or baseball. The style of teachings taught also has an impact on the effects on the students. Having more of a traditional teaching, which focuses on inner power and self control is more effective then modern teachings.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?

The author of the article is Jikkemien Vertonghen and Marc Theeboom but they use many other authors as references in writing their paper. It is an article from the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine. The purpose of this article is to show the relationship between the psychological being of people and martial arts.

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?

This is an informative article meant to try to understand the issue of martial arts and what it can do to people who participate in it.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?

There is no bias because the authors mention both sides of the argument.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?

The author uses many other references in this writing making his points stronger because it is more reliable.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?

I plan on using this article to prove my point that martial arts has a positive impact. But there are also some negative points in this article that I can use as my counterargument.
