FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded): EX: The article cites Maria Nikolajeva, a professor of at Cambridge, as saying that Bella does not "in any way promote independent thinking or personal development" in women, instead portraying a woman "meek and willing to do anything for her vampire boyfriend" (POV). |
Benjamin Milnes explains that "when one thinks about the original purpose of martial arts...in almost every school there is an essence of moral code" showing that martila arts isn't all bad.(Milnes) |
Milnes later contradicts what he says by stating that "martial arts are simply a collection of techniques used in war" and therefore "do not require ethics"(Milnes). |
He later finds the purpose of ethnics and that "it can only be to guide or restrain the practitioners" and leading them to "use their knowledge wisely instead of greedily"(Milnes). |
How martial arts effects us in our modern world is to "prevent wars from being waged, or fights being fought" which results in less violence in our world today.(Milnes) |
With martial arts "giving moral structure and discipline to the people who use it", martial can only teach discipline and not violence.(Milnes) |
Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):
In this article Milnes talks about how martial arts was developed for war and combat between warriors. He talks about how martial arts was a need for warfare but now since students aren't soldiers the purposes of martial arts have changed. People take martial arts for many different reasons but he finds the main purpose of martial arts is not to be prepared to fight but to prevent fights from happening. This occurs because of the ethic and moral code martial arts is suppose to teach.
Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?
The author of this article is Benjamin Milnes and he is a platinum author for ezine articles. The purpose of this article is to share his thoughts and what he thinks is the purpose of martial arts.
Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?
The author wrote this article because it is is his job.
Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?
There is a slight bias because he doesn't really mention the effects of martial arts being taught without a moral or ethic code.
References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?
The author doesn't really use much references in his writing.
Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?
I plan on using this information to show that even though martial arts teaches people how to fight it also teaches them to choose wisely when they do decide to use it.
