FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):
EX: The article cites Maria Nikolajeva, a professor of at Cambridge, as saying that Bella does not "in any way promote independent thinking or personal development" in women, instead portraying a woman "meek and willing to do anything for her vampire boyfriend" (POV).
Mixed martial arts is violent for it "experienced its second death due to competition from a regulated event" and "contribute to families’ and friends’ grief for their deceased loved ones"(Mayeda).
It is difficult to call something violent because it "[depends] on an individual’s personal background"  and " can vary immensely, to the degree that an event may be considered violent for one"(Mayeda)
When applying the World Heaths Organizations definition of violence "MMA is at its core, violent"(Mayeda).
Mayeda explains that MMA may be violent but "Injuries, even death, are a risk in all sports" and that even non contact sports carry risks(Mayeda).
Even though " MMA competitions have a high likelihood of injury" we cannot assume that "MMA is the most violent or dangerous sporting practice"(Mayeda).

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

In this article the author focuses not on certain martial arts but Mixed Martial Arts which is a combination of various techniques. He explains that MMA is violent and can lead to death but there are also other sports out there that can cause harm. He believes that by preparing fighters more we can lower the chances of unfortunate deaths and injuries that make MMA look so bad. People look at MMA to be o dangerous when in reality we can never 100% ensure safety because accidents can always happen.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?

The author is David Mayeda and the purpose of this site is to inform people about MMA.
Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?

This articlw is simply informative and he is writing it because it is his job.
Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?

I do not detect a bias because the author touches both the positive and negative points and views on MMA.
References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?

The author sites the World Health Organization which makes his points stronger.
Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?

I will use this source to explain that yes it can be violent but violence is everywhere and we can't 100% prevent it. MMA can cause death but it was not intentional and can be prevented by improving the MMA system such as UFC.

EX: The article cites Maria Nikolajeva, a professor of at Cambridge, as saying that Bella does not "in any way promote independent thinking or personal development" in women, instead portraying a woman "meek and willing to do anything for her vampire boyfriend" (POV).
Benjamin Milnes explains that "when one thinks about the original purpose of martial arts...in almost every school there is an essence of moral code" showing that martila arts isn't all bad.(Milnes)
Milnes later contradicts what he says by stating that "martial arts are simply a collection of techniques used in war" and therefore "do not require ethics"(Milnes).
He later finds the purpose of ethnics and that "it can only be to guide or restrain the practitioners" and leading them to "use their knowledge wisely instead of greedily"(Milnes).
How martial arts effects us in our modern world is to "prevent wars from being waged, or fights being fought" which results in less violence in our world today.(Milnes)
With martial arts "giving moral structure and discipline to the people who use it", martial can only teach discipline and not violence.(Milnes)

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

In this article Milnes talks about how martial arts was developed for war and combat between warriors. He talks about how martial arts was a need for warfare but now since students aren't soldiers the purposes of martial arts have changed. People take martial arts for many different reasons but he finds the main purpose of martial arts is not to be prepared to fight but to prevent fights from happening. This occurs because of the ethic and moral code martial arts is suppose to teach.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?

The author of this article is Benjamin Milnes and he is a platinum author for ezine articles. The purpose of this article is to share his thoughts and what he thinks is the purpose of martial arts.
Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?

The author wrote this article because it is is his job.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?

There is a slight bias because he doesn't really mention the effects of martial arts being taught without a moral or ethic code.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?

The author doesn't really use much references in his writing.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?

I plan on using this information to show that even though martial arts teaches people how to fight it also teaches them to choose wisely when they do decide to use it.

Scott Oliver, the father of Hunter who struggles with autism and epilepsy "worried that [taekwondo] could be too rigorous for his son" but later found that "not only could [Hunter] do it, he could enjoy it as well"(Ledig).
Before taking taekwondo Hunter was "refusing to eat" but "the first thing Hunter learned was the importance of good nutrition" and saw "the importance of eating regularly to keep up his strength"(Ledig).
Not only did Hunter learn the importance of nutrition but " 'He's much more self-confident' " and " 'If there is something he cannot do, he'll still try it anyway' "(Man-Son-Hing).
Hunters self confidence isn't only on the mat but "that self-confidence carries over into his home life as well"(Ledig).
Man-Son-Hing is a firm believer in the powers of martial arts for "Martial arts is not just another sport — it's a way of life" and he has proven this point with helping Hunter both physically and mentally.

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

Ledig shares a story about a boy named Hunter Oliver who struggles with autism and epilepsy. He refuses to eat and tries taekwondo to help improve his health and overall being. Taekwondo helped him realize that he needs to eat and gains weight to where he is healthy. He has also become more self confident and doesn't rely on his parents to feed him. Taekwondo was able to help him overcome the obstacles that his conditions put in front of him and he now lives a more normal life.

The author uses Hunters instructors, masters and parents to make his points stronger.

EX: The article cites Maria Nikolajeva, a professor of at Cambridge, as saying that Bella does not "in any way promote independent thinking or personal development" in women, instead portraying a woman "meek and willing to do anything for her vampire boyfriend" (POV).
Martial Arts was seen as negative effect after Endresen and Olweus "concluded that participating in power sports such as weightlifting, wrestling and oriental martial arts (karate, judo, and taekwondo) leads to an increase in antisocial behavior in youth"(Vertonghen and Theeboom).

Researchers "suggested that traditional martial arts practise [have] a positive influence on personality traits of participants, as opposed to training in modern martial arts" because  it focuses on "meditative aspects, stressing selfcontrol, conflict avoidance, respect for others, kata training, and the study of philosophy"(Vertonghen and Theeboom).

Steyn and Roux "compared the psychological well-being of taekwondo-in, hockey players and a non-sport group" and found that the "personal growth and self-acceptance scores of taekwondoin were significantly higher than those of the hockey players and the non-sport group"(Vertonghen and Theeboom).
With the relationship between martial arts and violence "was concluded that longer training was associated with lower levels of aggressiveness"(Vertonghen and Theeboom).
Authors like Konzak, Klavora and Layton suggest "that it takes several years of training
to obtain positive outcomes" and it is still unknown if "changes in personality, psychological and behavioral characteristics are long-lasting"(Vertonghen and Theeboom).

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

The Journal of Sports and Medicine brings together different sources to discuss the issue of martial arts having a positive or negative effect on its participants. Some negative aspects to martial arts is that it can produce antisocial behaviors. It takes time to see these positive changes because the longer you have been participating in it the more you gain those positive traits of self confidence and self acceptance. Tests have proven that participating in martial arts has a better impact then those playing other sports like hockey or baseball. The style of teachings taught also has an impact on the effects on the students. Having more of a traditional teaching, which focuses on inner power and self control is more effective then modern teachings.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?

The author of the article is Jikkemien Vertonghen and Marc Theeboom but they use many other authors as references in writing their paper. It is an article from the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine. The purpose of this article is to show the relationship between the psychological being of people and martial arts.

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?

This is an informative article meant to try to understand the issue of martial arts and what it can do to people who participate in it.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?

There is no bias because the authors mention both sides of the argument.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?

The author uses many other references in this writing making his points stronger because it is more reliable.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?

I plan on using this article to prove my point that martial arts has a positive impact. But there are also some negative points in this article that I can use as my counterargument.
