Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

The Fighters Mind tells the story of many martial arts fighters. Sheridan interviews and trains with the top fighters in the world and gets their insight on martial arts. We see the struggle and courage fighters obtain through their journey of multiple fights. Win or lose, each fighter learned from their experience and came out a better person. It shows the real meaning behind the reason of why fighters do that they do and why they love what they do.

Interview

How are you connected to this topic?

He is a taekwondo master and owns his own taekwondo studio. He is still a competitor, fighter and coach.

How long have you been doing martial arts? What styles have you learned?

He has been doing martial arts for more than 20 years now and not only competes in taekwondo but also in boxing, Brazilian jiu jitsu, Muay Thai and MMA (mixed marital arts).

What are some things you have obtained from participating in martial arts? Both physical and mental.

He has developed a mind set of never giving up in everything that he does. He has not only learned how to defend himself but also determination and perseverance. He has been on the taekwondo national team multiple times and still wants to continue to fight in other marital arts.

Do you see your martial arts career as a positive or negative experience?

He see’s it as positive because he learned many things that can help him not only in martial arts but also in life. By being a Master of a studio he is able to help kids reach their goals and help them learn the tools he has learned to help them in their future.

Do you believe martial arts to be good or bad to our society?

He believes is to be good to our society because it promotes and teaches good character and morale.

What are your thoughts on how to improve the problem of marital arts only being seen as violent?

To improve martial arts reputation he believes that instructors and masters should always teach their students the true meaning of taekwondo. To help them realize that it isn’t just fighting but also a way of life. To teach their students to be disciplined, courteous and humble outside of the studio.

What are some of your thoughts on the opposing view that martial arts is violent and has a negative affect on society?

He believes that people only look at martial arts in one way and don’t really see it in the eyes of the fighters. They don’t really understand that reason why martial artist fight.

What does this topic mean to you?

He believes that marital artist should always remember what they have learned and never take advantage of it. That it’s up to them to display to the public the beauty of marital arts.

How do you feel about MMA and UFC?

MMA and UFC are a good way for fighters to showcase their abilities and give them an opportunity to push themselves. Their goals aren’t really to beat someone up but to test themselves and grow as a person. A lot can be learned from overcoming fears and pushing yourself past your limits.

How do you think we can promote martial arts in more of a positive view to the public who have no idea about the teachings and ideas of martial arts?

We can promote martial arts better by educating the public more of the background of martial arts and get them to understand why fighters fight. It is also up to martial artist to live up to those expectations and remember what they have learned and to use it wisely.

FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):
EX: The article cites Maria Nikolajeva, a professor of at Cambridge, as saying that Bella does not "in any way promote independent thinking or personal development" in women, instead portraying a woman "meek and willing to do anything for her vampire boyfriend" (POV).
Mixed martial arts is violent for it "experienced its second death due to competition from a regulated event" and "contribute to families’ and friends’ grief for their deceased loved ones"(Mayeda).
It is difficult to call something violent because it "[depends] on an individual’s personal background"  and " can vary immensely, to the degree that an event may be considered violent for one"(Mayeda)
When applying the World Heaths Organizations definition of violence "MMA is at its core, violent"(Mayeda).
Mayeda explains that MMA may be violent but "Injuries, even death, are a risk in all sports" and that even non contact sports carry risks(Mayeda).
Even though " MMA competitions have a high likelihood of injury" we cannot assume that "MMA is the most violent or dangerous sporting practice"(Mayeda).

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

In this article the author focuses not on certain martial arts but Mixed Martial Arts which is a combination of various techniques. He explains that MMA is violent and can lead to death but there are also other sports out there that can cause harm. He believes that by preparing fighters more we can lower the chances of unfortunate deaths and injuries that make MMA look so bad. People look at MMA to be o dangerous when in reality we can never 100% ensure safety because accidents can always happen.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?

The author is David Mayeda and the purpose of this site is to inform people about MMA.
Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?

This articlw is simply informative and he is writing it because it is his job.
Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?

I do not detect a bias because the author touches both the positive and negative points and views on MMA.
References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?

The author sites the World Health Organization which makes his points stronger.
Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?

I will use this source to explain that yes it can be violent but violence is everywhere and we can't 100% prevent it. MMA can cause death but it was not intentional and can be prevented by improving the MMA system such as UFC.

Benjamin Milnes explains that "when one thinks about the original purpose of martial arts...in almost every school there is an essence of moral code" showing that martila arts isn't all bad.(Milnes)
Milnes later contradicts what he says by stating that "martial arts are simply a collection of techniques used in war" and therefore "do not require ethics"(Milnes).
He later finds the purpose of ethnics and that "it can only be to guide or restrain the practitioners" and leading them to "use their knowledge wisely instead of greedily"(Milnes).
How martial arts effects us in our modern world is to "prevent wars from being waged, or fights being fought" which results in less violence in our world today.(Milnes)
With martial arts "giving moral structure and discipline to the people who use it", martial can only teach discipline and not violence.(Milnes)

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

In this article Milnes talks about how martial arts was developed for war and combat between warriors. He talks about how martial arts was a need for warfare but now since students aren't soldiers the purposes of martial arts have changed. People take martial arts for many different reasons but he finds the main purpose of martial arts is not to be prepared to fight but to prevent fights from happening. This occurs because of the ethic and moral code martial arts is suppose to teach.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?

The author of this article is Benjamin Milnes and he is a platinum author for ezine articles. The purpose of this article is to share his thoughts and what he thinks is the purpose of martial arts.
Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?

The author wrote this article because it is is his job.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?

There is a slight bias because he doesn't really mention the effects of martial arts being taught without a moral or ethic code.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?

The author doesn't really use much references in his writing.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?

I plan on using this information to show that even though martial arts teaches people how to fight it also teaches them to choose wisely when they do decide to use it.
